Helping Delhi's sick and wounded birds
A stone's throw away from the hectic hustle and bustle of Chandni Chowk, the heart of Delhi's old congested quarters; you will find something as unusual as a hospital built exclusively for birds. The Charity Birds Hospital is housed on the premises of a famous Jain temple in its own three storied building. Like an oasis in the otherwise chaotic Indian capital, it has since 1929 been a refuge for the giant city's sick and wounded bird population.
Run by the Jain community, a religious sect that has its origins in Hinduism, the hospital is an expression of great compassion and the result of a religious belief that teaches its followers to cherish all life, no matter how big or small. Each bird that arrives is given a temporary home and careful treatment from an experienced veterinarian until fully recovered. No bird is rejected.
